Standing With Our Heroes
We owe no greater gratitude than that belonging to our nation’s military and veterans. We have the best trained and best lead military in the world. These service members have sacrificed their lives, comfort, and safety to fight for the continued security of our nation and the freedoms we share. My dad is a veteran of three wars. When he was activated to serve in Viet Nam, I saw firsthand the sacrifice the families of these brave men and women have made.
The Sixth District is fortunate to be home to the Alvin C. York Veterans Hospital. Recent reports of inadequate care in VA hospitals remind us that it is our duty to make sure our veterans always receive the highest quality of care. I support funding for additional doctors and healthcare professionals to reduce the wait for treatment and improve care. Additional counseling with special attention to combat stress injuries are a priority. I support making out of network health care available to our veterans, to reduce wait times and overcrowding. Our vigilance is a small price to pay in return for the liberties they have defended for us.
I support funding a Fischer House at our VA, for the families of those needing care. Congressman Gordon voted to fund a multi-million dollar turtle tunnel, but did not fund a 2 million dollar Fisher House. I will place the needs of our VA as a priority.
Just as it is critical to support our troops in the midst of combat, we also must ensure that our veterans receive the highest quality of care and services upon their return home. Returning veterans must have access to education benefits, job training and employment options. I encourage private business to hire our veterans especially those disabled. Fundamental changes need to take place in order to be certain no veteran goes without access to quality and efficient care. In Congress, I will fight to ensure our veterans have access to the services they need. I support tax benefits to help ease the financial burdens our citizen-warriors and their families face and updated, improved GI Bill education benefits.
