Rutherford GOP Questions Gordon Statement on Public Option Congressman's Claims at Odds With Vote

"This issue is too critical to the future of our nation to fall victim to the political double-talk of a career politician."
MURFREESBORO, TN - Rutherford County GOP Chairman Lou Ann Zelenik today questioned Congressman Bart Gordon's statement to the Murfreesboro Daily News Journal that he opposes the so-called "Public Option" provision in health care reform legislation under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives.
On July 31, Gordon cast a "yes" vote to advance H.R. 3200, "The America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009" out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and to the full House for consideration. Title II, Subtitle B of H.R. 3200 clearly calls for the establishment of a Public Option.
According to the Daily News Journal, Gordon is quoted as saying "The problem I have with the public option is I don't want to see the public option morphed into a single-payer option (government paying health care for all)," Gordon said. "I haven't seen it structured in a way that I think is a level playing field." "Congressman Gordon's statement strains his credibility past the breaking point," Zelenik said earlier today. "Just twenty-one days ago, Bart Gordon sided with Nancy Pelosi and the liberal leadership in Congress to approve the creation of a government-run health care system. Today, faced with collapsing support for the Obama/Pelosi plan, he tells the people of Tennessee that he opposes a Public Option. This issue is too critical to the future of our nation to fall victim to the political doubletalk of a career politician."
In the Daily News Journal, Gordon also claims to have "stood up" to President Obama and Speaker Pelosi to make sure legislation is not passed too quickly. Zelenik questioned Gordon's assertion in light of his joining with liberals to push through the bill before the August Congressional recess and his last-minute reversal that allowed taxpayer funding of abortions in the legislation. "Tennesseans want honest answers and true representation from their Congressman. In Bart Gordon, they get neither."
